About Iron Gates

A chain of gorges where the Danube cuts between the Carpathian and Balkan mountains on the Serbia and Romania border. The Iron Gate I dam, completed in 1972, raised the river and submerged the island of Ada Kaleh. The Roman Tabula Traiana plaque commemorates the road built by Emperor Trajan. A giant rock carving of the Dacian king Decebalus overlooks the river. Djerdap National Park protects the Serbian side.
