Royal Gorge
About Royal Gorge
A narrow granite gorge carved by the Arkansas River near Canon City, Colorado. Up to 380 m deep and only about 15 m wide at its base. The Royal Gorge Bridge, built in 1929, hangs about 291 m above the river and was long the highest bridge in the world. Two railroads fought the Royal Gorge Railroad War over the narrow right of way around 1880. A 2013 wildfire destroyed most buildings in the park.
