About Taroko Gorge

A marble gorge carved by the Liwu River in eastern Taiwan, the centerpiece of Taroko National Park. The river cut down through rock lifted by the collision of tectonic plates. The Central Cross-Island Highway, blasted through the gorge, opened in 1960. Trails such as Swallow Grotto and the Tunnel of Nine Turns cling to the cliffs. The April 2024 Hualien earthquake caused major rockfalls.
