Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
About Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
A colorful canyon carved by the Yellowstone River in Yellowstone National Park. Its walls glow yellow, pink, and orange from hydrothermally altered rhyolite. The Lower Falls plunge 94 m, nearly twice the height of Niagara. Thomas Moran sketched it on the 1871 Hayden Expedition, and his images helped persuade Congress to create the park in 1872. Artist Point offers the classic view.
